THE POWER & PROMISE OF GIVING

Summary:

One of the most controversial subjects in the faith community is that of giving. Though it ought not to be, giving has occasioned countless debates and, in some sense, has been relegated to donating to either a local ministry or a Christian organization. The Scripture paints a different picture of giving. God has revealed giving, not as an option for His people, but as a mandate to govern our lives and a means of releasing His true promises. From the beginning, giving has served to teach the wonderful truth of stewardship; a truth which says all created things belong to God, who has graciously called us to be stewards over what belongs to Him. We are, in fact, owners of nothing, yet managers of everything, [Gen. 1:26]. It is through our faithful stewardship that our trustworthiness is proven, and God can trust us with greater things [Luke 16:11]. This message has been designed to awaken the global church to the reality that the way we steward the little in our hands determines whether God releases His abundance reserved for us [Prov. 13:22].

Discussion Questions:

The true heart of a steward is shown in the words of Israel’s greatest king when he said, “for all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee,” [1 Chron. 29:14]. David reminds us that God owns everything, and what we give to Him was His to begin with. Discuss some ways we can become more faithful stewards through an understanding of Divine ownership. Why do some struggle with giving, and how can we help them overcome this struggle?
According to Scripture, giving is the natural staircase to true riches [Luke 16:11]. Discuss what comes to mind when you think of true riches, and why our stewardship of natural things opens us to the promise of stewardship over them. Lastly, discuss whether it is possible, if at all, for a Spirit-filled person to fail to be a generous person.
