EXCELLENCE THAT TAKES OUR BREATH AWAY

Summary:

The Old Testament story of David and his son Solomon starts with David entrusting the divine blueprint for building God’s house and its subsequent operations to his son. With its completion and dedication, we are told that the glory of God fills the house [1 Kings 8:10-11]. Following this, we were told of the royal visit of the Cushite Queen of Sheba, [1 Kings 10:1-9]. After witnessing the splendour of God’s house, experiencing its operations, and seeing the excellence of Solomon’s ministers and staff, we’re told: “that there was no more spirit in her” [1 Kings 10:5]. In other words, the experience took her breath away! Though she was from a royal court, she had never seen such excellence before. This story was a prelude to the coming of David’s greater Son, Jesus Christ, and the house that He would build, called the church, [Matt. 16:18]. As members of His house, the church, we are called to excellence; an excellence that causes those who see us, hear us, and experience us to marvel at the greatness of our God, the beauty of His people, and the splendour of His work. To this end, Rhema has been called, and for this cause we exist.

Discussion Questions:

According to the Scripture “the righteous is more excellent than their neighbour,” [Prov. 12:26a]. Start the discussion with definitions of excellence, then discuss how these definitions can be put into practice by followers of Jesus Christ. What are some hindrances to excellence becoming our mindset and our lifestyle, and how can we overcome them?
Spend some time discussing how we balance our pursuit of excellence with our patience with human failure. How can we ensure that our journey toward excellence is inviting enough and accommodating enough so that everyone can participate and no one is intimidated by the feeling of being inadequate?
