VHG DISCUSSION: PURPOSE – PART 3

PURPOSE & A SOUND MIND

Summary:
The final message in this series focuses on the psychological aspect of purpose and the role that the mind plays in walking out our purpose. Scripture teaches that the mind is one of the ways through which we serve the Lord [Rom. 7:25]. In fact, we are called to love the Lord with all our mind [Mark 12:30]. Because of its importance, God assures us that He has given us a sound mind [2 Tim. 1:7]. Over the many centuries of the church, believers have faced a barrage of spiritual attacks, many of which are aimed at our mental state and health. The devil would like nothing more than to destroy us in the place of our thoughts. To counter this, the Holy Spirit is constantly working to renew our mind [Rom. 12:2], forming the mind of Christ in us [Phil. 2:5], guarding our heart and mind through His peace [Phil. 4:7], while keeping our mind in perfect peace [Isa. 26:3]. It is incumbent upon us to pay close attention to our mental health. Let’s take a moment to talk about the golden altar of our soul, the mind.
Discussion Questions:

  • According to Scripture, the Old Testament tabernacle was designed to be a dwelling place for God [Ex. 25:8]; however, we have come to learn that its fulfillment is the believer, God’s living tabernacle [2 Cor. 6:16]. We’re the house that God lives in; our spirit, soul, and body are His house. Our mind plays a significant role in this house. What role have your thoughts played in your understanding of God and spiritual things? Discuss some of the ways that you have developed self-awareness through your thinking. Would you say that you are more of a thinker than a talker?
  • According to Scripture, God has clothed us with a humble mind [Col. 3:12]. He also keeps our mind free from fear through His perfect peace [Isa. 26:3], and He has given to us the mind of an overcomer [Rom. 8:37-39]. Discuss what a humble mind looks like and how such a mind thinks. Discuss some specific ways to safeguard the peace of your mental state. Finally, share with others what you do to maintain the mind of an overcomer in the face of life’s many adversities.
