VHG – Purpose – Part 2: Our Part in Purpose

VHG DISCUSSION: PURPOSE – PART 2

OUR PART IN PURPOSE

Summary:
One of the greatest truths of Scripture is found in these words, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is a gift of God,” [Eph. 2:8]. Salvation is a gift and no amount of human effort can ever earn it. Put another way, we cannot work to be saved. However, what we can say is that now that we’re saved, there must be some works that demonstrate our salvation. After receiving God’s wondrous gift, one cannot help but go to work for the One who has saved us. It is inconceivable that the believer would not feel a strong desire to express their gratitude to God by rolling up their sleeves and working in His kingdom. This is what Our Part in purpose is all about. Now that we are saved, the next sentence from our lips should be, “What would you have us do, Lord?” [Acts 9:6]. Let’s discuss this further by looking at the empowerment gifts, the lanes, and the assignments that come with being saved.
Discussion Questions:

  • According to Scripture, the gift of salvation comes with many empowerment gifts [Eph. 4:8], followed by assigned lanes for those gifts to work in [1 Cor. 7:20], along with specific assignments attached to these gifts [Matt. 25:14-15]. Everyone has a purpose and something specific to do in this life. Share with your house members what you believe your gift[s] is and the defined lane that you operate in. For example, do you have a healing gift and serve in the healthcare lane, or a teaching gift serving in an academic lane, or a prophetic gift serving in a ministerial lane?
  • According to Scripture, we can come to the knowledge of our gifts by diligently seeking the Lord [Matt. 7:7-11], or through discerning where our strengths and passions lie. Share some ways in which someone can gain a better understanding of what their gifts are, and then how they can use their gifts to change aspects of this world. Finally, take a moment and discuss what finishing looks like. What are some signs that you have completed your assignment?
