VHG DISCUSSION: REFORMATION – THE GOD TURN – PART 1

HOUSE TO HOUSE – THE POWER OF SMALL GROUPS

Summary:

Reformation- the need to revisit, renew, revive, and refresh- has always followed God’s people. This is partly due to our propensity to wander away from Him, [Isa. 53:6]. The book of Judges, an example of reformation, shows Israel caught in a cycle of backsliding, repentance, deliverance, and backsliding again. The coming of Jesus was the quintessential example of reformation; God sending His Son because the world had gone astray, [Luke 19:10]. The history of the church shows our need for reformation, from the Protestant Reformation to the Spirit-filled Azusa Revivals; God’s people need renewal and refreshing. In this modern era, Rhema Ministries has answered the call for reformation, and now we must answer the call to discipleship. After reformation comes the making of disciples, which takes place in small groups, or as the Scriptures put it, “from house to house” [Acts 2:46]. The goal of reformation is not mega churches or more conferences and concerts; it’s making disciples of all nations [Matt. 28:19]. Disciples are mature followers of Christ who in turn make other disciples, and thus fulfill God’s original mandate [Gen 1:28].

Discussion Questions:

  • The Scripture teaches that 3,000 souls were saved on the day of Pentecost, followed by another 5,000 the next day. Unlike today, these 8,000 souls did not form a mega church; instead, they went from house to house, ensuring discipleship, commonality, and fellowship [Acts 2:42-46]. Discuss ways we can ensure that everyone who gives their life to Christ belongs to a small group and is truly being discipled. What is some evidence that a generation is being discipled to follow Jesus Christ?
  • According to Scripture, when it comes to salvation, God is not against size or numbers; in fact, His desire is for all to be saved [1 Tim. 2:4]. The difficulty with size is that some are lost in the crowd, and accountability is often non-existent. Discuss what accountability looks like and how we can achieve biblical accountability to God and to each other using small groups. In essence, how can we ensure that none are lost?
