VHG – How We Change the World: Spirituality = First Things First – Part 2

VHG DISCUSSION: HOW WE CHANGE THE WORLD – PART 2
SPIRITUALITY = FIRST THINGS FIRST

1. Why Is Spirituality So Important:
Summary:
The origin and foundation of all things is spirit. Beginning with God, who is a Spirit,
spirituality is the source of all that is and must be seen as the driving force behind all that is
natural. Having been born again, all believers must now master the skill of being spiritual in
a natural world, balancing that which can be seen with that which cannot be seen.

Discussion Questions:
• Discuss specific ways that we can prioritize spiritual things as firsts in our lives.
• After prioritizing spiritual things, how do we balance them with natural things to
avoid being seen as those who are “so heavenly minded that they’re no earthly
good?”

2. Be Prayed Up:
Summary:
Prayer or communing with God is the believer’s “relational lifeline” with God. As we know,
relationships that are void of healthy, consistent communication will ultimately break
down. To ensure that spiritual things are first, believers have been called to a vibrant life of
prayer.

Discussion Questions:
• Share with others some of the things that you do to ensure a vibrant prayer life.
• What are some steps that one can take to overcome lethargy when it creeps into
their prayer life, and how can they restore a passion for prayer?

3. Be Covered & Be Filled Up:
Summary:
Followers of Jesus Christ will encounter resistance in this life. To overcome this, believers
are admonished to be spiritually covered and spiritually filled up. Covered with the spiritual
armour of God and filled with the indwelling Spirit and Word, believers can overcome all
forms of resistance as they seek to be witnesses of Jesus Christ in the global village.

Discussion Questions:
• List and discuss practical ways in which believers can be covered with God’s
armour.
• How does one receive the Holy Spirit, and how do we allow God’s word to dwell in
us?
